History of the School

Ngíya Girls High School was founded by the Christian Missionaries Society (CMS) in 1923. In 1953, it became a teachers’ training college (TTC).

Due to pressing need for girls’ schools, Ng’iya Girls became a secondary school in 1962 and admitted its first form one students who sat their Ordinary Level Certificate examinations in 1965. The school enrolled the first Advanced High school-level Science classes in 1971. The high school classes were discontinued by the government in 1989, when the education system changed.  In 2010 the school was identified as Centre for Academic Excellence and got elevated in 2012 to a National School Status in Nyanza Province the current Siaya County.  It is the second national girls’ school in Siaya County, in Nyanza region.  

In its early years, Ng’iya Girls was a top performing school. It produced illustrious ladies who have excelled in all spheres of life. They include the Late Former Minister Honourable Grace Ogot, the Late Grace Onyango; the first woman Member of Parliament in Kenya; H.E Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch, Honourable, Dr. Alice Akinyi Ochieng’ Kaudia; the first Environment Secretary for Kenya, Honourable Rose Nyamunga among countless others.
